fibre art in australia Page 8

Australia’s fibre art scene is livelier than a magpie in nesting season, and twice as crafty.

From weaving and tapestry to sculptural textiles, strong hubs in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart keep the looms humming, with stalwarts like the Australian Tapestry Workshop (Melbourne) and the Tamworth Textile Triennial showing how serious thread can be.

State galleries, regional venues, and big craft/quilt fairs round out the calendar, mixing museum polish with hands‑on dye pots and felting needles.

If you’re keen to learn, community studios and art schools offer workshops that’ll have you spinning, knotting, and muttering about warp tension like a pro.

Programs and dates change each year, so check current listings before you pack the yarn and a thermos.
