fortuner vs mux 2023 Page 6

Comparing the 2023 Toyota Fortuner and Isuzu MU-X is like choosing between two tough utes in tuxedos: both can clamber up a fire trail then do the school run without spilling a latte.

On paper, the Fortuner hits harder off the line, while the MU-X tows more and gives you extra cabin space—so choose your poison: punch or payload.

• Fortuner pros: Strong 2.8L diesel (about 150 kW/500 Nm), tidy size off-road, vast Toyota dealer network, decent economy.
• Fortuner cons: 3,100 kg braked tow limit, tighter third row/boot (fold-up seats), ride can get fidgety, safety tech feels older.

• MU-X pros: Big cabin, 3,500 kg braked towing, comfy highway manners, modern safety suite with 5-star ANCAP.
• MU-X cons: Engine is gruff (about 140 kW/450 Nm), a touch heavier/thirstier, infotainment can be clunky.

Both are ladder-frame 7-seaters with low-range 4WD and similar running costs; pick based on whether you prioritise towing/space (MU-X) or stronger shove and tighter dimensions (Fortuner).

Either way, the hardest terrain may be the shopping centre car park on a Saturday.
