Ah, the lure of free caravan sites—because who doesn't love a good bargain with a side of dirt and possibly mosquitoes? In Australia, free caravan sites often come in the form of rest areas, some national parks with basic facilities, or community-supported camping spots. Expect minimal amenities, often just a patch of dirt or gravel, and a strict “leave no trace” policy enforced by the local rangers. Popular regions for such freebies include parts of Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia, but always check with local councils or use apps and websites like Tradingpost or CarShowroom for up-to-date info.
Keep in mind, these sites might be a bit of a gamble—no power, no showers, and sometimes a neighbour who snores louder than a diesel engine. So, pack your patience along with your camping gear!
