Australia’s new Fuel Efficiency Standard (NVES) finally drags our showroom into the present, kicking in from 2025. It sets fleet‑average CO2 targets for new cars and utes—beat the target and manufacturers earn credits; miss it and they cop penalties. The aim is more efficient choices (hybrids, PHEVs, EVs) without banning your burly tow rig—though thirstier models will wear a price for their sins. For drivers, expect lower fuel bills over time and a broader spread of frugal options. For the fine print on targets and categories, consult the government’s documentation.
