The Gold Coast Indy 500 was a short-lived but flashy event on the Australian motorsport calendar, held at the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit. It was an American-style open-wheel race featuring IndyCars, running from 1991 to 1993. Despite the glitz and glamour, it struggled to find a solid fan base against the more popular V8 Supercars. The race was known for its high speeds and tight street layout, offering plenty of thrills and spills. Unfortunately, financial and logistical issues saw the event cancelled after just three years, paving the way for the V8 Supercars’ dominance at the Gold Coast. For a taste of similar excitement nowadays, the Supercars Gold Coast 600 is the go-to event.
