Chasing electrical gremlins on a Great Wall ute or SUV? Start with the basics before blaming the ECU—these rigs can be fussy about power and earths, especially after a hard life on corrugations or through a few creek crossings.

A methodical check will save you hours of swearing and half a toolbox of blown fuses.

• Check battery health, alternator output, and main earth straps—weak grounds cause all sorts of phantom faults.
• Look for water or dust ingress in connectors (engine bay, doors, tailgate), then clean and reseat.
• Inspect fuses/relays and any aftermarket towbar, light bar, or stereo wiring for shorts or scotch-lock horrors.
• Common pain points: window switches, door lock actuators, corroded tail-light sockets, crank/cam sensors, and tired ignition barrels.

Work one circuit at a time, clean grounds, reseat connectors with dielectric grease, and if it’s still misbehaving, an auto sparky with wiring diagrams will have it sorted before your coffee cools.
