grey import car insurance Page 8

Ah, grey import car insurance – the fine art of convincing insurers that your lovingly sourced-from-overseas vehicle isn’t a rolling liability. In Australia, insuring a grey import can be trickier and pricier than your average locally-bought car, as insurers see them as higher risk due to parts availability, repair costs, and sometimes dodgy compliance issues.

Expect premiums to be notably higher, with some insurers outright refusing coverage. Key points to consider:

• Higher premiums: Often 20-50% more than standard vehicles.
• Limited insurer options: Not all insurers cover grey imports.
• Possible exclusions: Some policies won’t cover certain parts or repairs.
• Need for specialist insurer: Look for companies experienced with grey imports.
