GST in Australia is 10% and it applies to new cars and dealer-sold used cars—no, the ATO doesn’t accept a sausage sizzle as payment.
Private sales between individuals generally don’t include GST, but dealers charge it, and GST-registered businesses can usually claim input tax credits when the car is used for business.
Luxury Car Tax is a separate extra that can hit above certain thresholds, and it stacks on top of GST, not instead of it.
State charges like stamp duty, registration and CTP are also separate to GST, which is why the driveway price looks chunkier than the sticker.
If you’re buying “on-road,” the invoice should clearly show the GST component—if it doesn’t, ask questions with the confidence of a pit-lane marshal.
