handing in number plates qld Page 8

Handing in number plates in QLD is less glamorous than a pit stop, but mercifully simple. Take both plates and valid ID to a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre, tell them you’re cancelling the rego or surrendering the plates, and they’ll process it on the spot. If you’re cancelling registration, you may be eligible for a pro‑rata refund (less fees), and you’ll hand over the plates as part of that.

Personalised plates have extra options (like retaining the rights or placing them on hold), so check the PPQ/TMR rules before you stride in like a hero. If the plates are lost or stolen, report it to police first, then bring the reference when you cancel. Grab your toll tag off the car, call the insurer, and go reward yourself with a sausage roll—administrative victory achieved.
