hard shell roof top tent reviews australia Page 8

Hard shell roof top tents in Australia are the camping equivalent of a hotel room that appears on your car in 90 seconds—quick to deploy, tidy to pack, and far less flappy than soft shells.

Pros: rapid setup, better weather sealing and aerodynamics, sturdier shells and mattresses; cons: hefty weight (often 55–90 kg), higher centre of gravity, and prices that can make your wallet hiss.

New units typically run from about $1,500 to $6,000+ depending on size and shell, while the used market hovers roughly $800 to $4,500 if you’re patient.

Mind your roof’s dynamic load rating, add proper crossbars, and plan for a ladder you can trust; condensation management and gas strut maintenance are the usual housekeeping.

Brands and layouts vary (clamshell, wedge, full pop-up), so focus on weight, mattress thickness, and internal height you can actually sit up in. Try before you buy—preferably in the wind, not just a showroom breeze.
