In Victoria, high beam is fair game at night on dark roads, but you must dip it when an oncoming vehicle is within 200 metres, or when you’re following another within 200 metres.

You can briefly flash high beam to warn of hazards, but turning the highway into a disco will earn you a fine and some very cranky neighbours.

Skip high beam in fog, heavy rain, dust or smoke—use low beam or approved fog lights unless you enjoy lighting your own personal white wall.

On lit urban streets, use it only if you’re not going to dazzle anyone; if in doubt, dip.
