Trying to decode a Holden compliance plate? Relax—it’s not a cryptic treasure map, just your car’s passport into Australia’s ADR club.
The plate (or later-model sticker) lists the VIN, manufacturer, approval number and the crucial Date of Compliance—month/year the car met Australian Design Rules and was cleared for sale, which can differ from the actual build date.
You’ll usually find it in the engine bay or driver’s door jamb; note the compliance date, then cross-check the VIN with registration records or a reputable VIN decoder to confirm model, series and engine.
Remember: buyers care about both dates—build for spec changes and compliance for first-sale timing—so don’t let a cheeky seller blur them together.
If the plate shows an ADR category (e.g., MA passenger car) and an approval number, that just proves it passed the right rules; it’s not a secret tune code.
When in doubt, ask for the build plate or service log, and verify the VIN against state rego; if you’re browsing on Tradingpost, a clear photo of the plate is your best friend.
