holden cruze head gasket problems Page 2

The Holden Cruze can cook its head gasket like a Sunday roast, particularly on the 1.4T and 1.8 petrols when the cooling system throws a wobbly.

Usual culprits are cracked plastic thermostat housings, leaky water pumps, and old coolant—overheat it once and the gasket waves the white flag.

Watch for these symptoms and checks:

• Coolant loss, sweet exhaust smell, white steam, and a grumpy cold-start misfire.
• Milky oil cap or chocolate-milk coolant, rock-hard hoses from over-pressurisation.
• Cooling system pressure test, hydrocarbon “sniff” test, and compression/leak-down.

A proper repair in Australia typically costs AUD $1,800–$3,500, more if the head’s warped or other cooling bits need replacing.

Prevention is cheaper than penance: replace the thermostat housing and water pump at the first hint of leaks, use the correct long-life coolant, and treat the temp gauge like a smoke alarm—not optional.
