In Australia, car horns are indeed legal but their use is strictly regulated to avoid unnecessary noise pollution and annoyance. Horns should only be used as a warning device to alert other road users to your presence or danger. Using a horn aggressively or without valid reason can lead to fines and penalties.

Different states may have subtle variations in their rules, but the general principle remains the same nationwide.

Keep it short, sharp, and sensible—your horn is not a karaoke mic. For specific regulations, consult your state's road authority or manuals available on ServiceCentral.
