Short answer: you can’t legally look up a private vehicle owner in WA just from a number plate—privacy laws say “nope”.
You can check rego status and basic vehicle details via the WA Department of Transport, and run a national PPSR check with the VIN to see if it’s encumbered, written off, or stolen.
Buying? Ask the seller for photo ID and proof of ownership, and make sure the VIN, engine number and rego papers all match—no dodgy vibes, thanks.
Had an incident or hit-and-run? Contact WA Police; for abandoned vehicles, try your local council.
Insurers and authorised parties can access owner details, but random plate-sleuthing is not a thing in Australia.
If you’re shopping on Tradingpost, do the checks first and keep your money where it belongs—out of someone else’s finance company.
