Diesel isn’t vanishing next Tuesday; in Australia it will be around for decades.
There’s no nationwide ban on selling new diesel cars, though the ACT plans to end new fossil-fuel light-vehicle sales by 2035, and makers face efficiency rules from 2025 that will shrink passenger-car choices. Freight, agriculture and mining still run on the stuff, so bowsers will keep pumping it through the 2030s and likely beyond. Expect fewer shiny new diesel SUVs, but utes, 4x4s and heavy vehicles will cling on like a kelpie on a ute tray. Used diesels will remain plentiful and perfectly serviceable if you keep the DPF happy and feed it decent fuel. In short: new diesel options taper through the late 2020s–2030s, and availability/support persists into the 2040s—long after your neighbour’s leaf blower has gone electric.
