Short answer: in Queensland, you need at least two working red brake lights at the rear of your car—no ifs, no buts. Many newer vehicles also have a third high-mounted stop lamp; while not universal for every older model, if your car has one fitted it must work to be roadworthy. If one of the two main lamps is out, you’re defectable and inviting a chat with the nice person in blue. Trailers need working stop lamps too, and all lamps must be red, clearly visible, and not obscured. Quick tip: get someone to stand behind the car while you press the pedal—free inspection, zero drama.
