In Victoria, a P1 driver can carry no more than one passenger aged 16 to under 22 at any time. Immediate family (like parents, siblings, and step/half equivalents) and your spouse/partner don’t count toward that limit, and if a fully licensed supervising driver is in the front seat, the restriction doesn’t apply. Everyone must wear seatbelts and you’re still on zero BAC—yes, even if Auntie June insists it was “just a sip”. If you need more peers on board for work or other bona fide reasons, you can apply for an exemption through VicRoads. In short: one mate your age is fine; a carload of the cheer squad is not.
