In WA it’s called Vehicle Licence Duty, and it’s basically stamp duty on the car’s dutiable value (the price you pay, typically including GST, not the rego or fees).
The rate is a sliding scale: up to $25,000 it’s 2.75%; from $25,001–$50,000 it increases progressively; over $50,000 it’s a flat 6.5%.
So a $20,000 runabout cops about $550 in duty, while a $60,000 family wagon will be around $3,900—more than enough for a very nice esky and a few sausages.
For an exact figure on your car, use the WA calculator and brace for the gentle thud of reality at the counter.
