how to buy a used car nsw Page 2

Buying a used car in NSW? Start by setting a budget that includes stamp duty, transfer fees and insurance, then run a $2 PPSR check to ensure the VIN isn’t stolen, written off or under finance.

Kick the tyres properly: full service history, pre‑purchase inspection, and a decent test drive (hot, cold and at highway speed). For registration, NSW uses an eSafety check (pink slip) when renewing rego on older cars, and a blue slip if you’re registering an unregistered car. From a licensed dealer you’ll get statutory protections and a brief cooling‑off period; private sales are “you buy it, you own it” territory. When you’ve shaken hands, lodge the transfer with Service NSW within 14 days and pay the duty/fees, then sort CTP and comprehensive cover before you swan off into the sunset. Oh, and make sure the engine and VIN numbers physically match the paperwork—because “close enough” won’t impress the nice people at the counter.
