In Australia, you can’t look up a private owner’s name (privacy laws), but you can verify a car’s status like a detective with a rego and a receipt.
Run a free registration check with your state authority (Service NSW, VicRoads, TMR QLD, etc.) using the plate or VIN to confirm it’s registered and not reported stolen.
Then buy a PPSR certificate (about $2) using the VIN; it shows finance owing, write‑off history, and stolen status—if it’s got a debt, walk away or make the seller clear it first.
When inspecting, match the VIN/engine numbers on the vehicle to the rego papers, sight the seller’s photo ID, and get a signed receipt stating VIN, price, date, and that the vehicle is free of encumbrances.
Dealers should supply clear title; private sellers should provide proof of ownership—if they can’t, that’s your cue to politely leg it.
