Short answer: in Australia you can’t pull an official “number of previous owners” report—privacy laws keep that locked up tighter than a glovebox on pay day.
What you can do is run a PPSR check using the VIN to confirm finance owing, write-off or stolen status, and registration history hits via NEVDIS.
Then ask for evidence: logbook stamps, service invoices, tyre/parts receipts and any old rego papers; these breadcrumbs show how many hands it’s passed through.
State road authorities (e.g., Service NSW, VicRoads, TMR QLD) offer free rego and some history checks, but they won’t name owners or give a neat tally.
If a seller claims “one owner,” ask for matching ID on early purchase paperwork and service records—trust, but verify like a suspicious koala.
Still unsure? Get an independent pre-purchase inspection; mechanics are very good at spotting cars that have lived more lives than a rental in school holidays.
