Selling a car privately in VIC isn’t dark arts—just paperwork in hi-vis. For a registered car, you’ll generally need to supply a current Roadworthy Certificate (unless exempt), plus give the buyer a receipt with VIN, rego, date, price and odometer. Jump onto VicRoads: the buyer completes the transfer within 14 days, and you submit the seller notification so future fines don’t follow you home. Plates usually stay on the car unless you’re cancelling the rego; remove your e-tag, toll accounts and personal data from the infotainment like it owes you money. Take safe payment (Osko/instant bank transfer in-branch), avoid test drives without licence and insurance, and don’t hand over keys until funds clear—no exceptions. Clean it, photograph it properly, be honest in the ad, and list it on Tradingpost to meet buyers not tyre-kickers. If the buyer wants it unregistered, you can skip the RWC, hand in plates, and they’ll sort permits; otherwise, keep copies of every document like a mildly paranoid librarian.
