In WA, ownership transfer is a two-step tango: seller notifies, buyer transfers—both via the Department of Transport’s DOTDirect, ideally within 14 days to dodge late fees.
The seller submits a Notification of Change of Ownership and gives the buyer a receipt with the vehicle details and sale price.
The buyer logs into DOTDirect, starts a vehicle transfer, and pays the transfer fee plus stamp duty (based on the dutiable value).
Have your WA licence/ID, VIN or plate number, purchase date and price handy; no routine roadworthy is required in WA unless the car is unlicensed or has a defect notice.
Buying from interstate? Expect inspection and licensing steps before you can plate it in WA.
Keep copies of everything—because when bureaucracy asks for a document, it always wants the one you didn’t bring.
