Heading to Sydney via the Hume Highway (M31)? Expect roughly 880 km from Melbourne, about 8.5–10 hours depending on stops, roadworks, and your pie-to-fuel ratio.

Speed limits mostly 110 km/h, with plenty of dual carriageway; watch for cameras and the odd caravan doing its best impression of a mobile chicane.

Good stop-offs: Albury–Wodonga, Holbrook (yes, the submarine), Gundagai, Yass and Goulburn; fuel and coffee are frequent, excuses to stretch even more so.

No tolls on the Hume itself; you’ll only cop tolls if you wander onto Sydney’s motorways at the end. Keep it simple: set cruise, sip water, and don’t race the B-doubles.
