The Hume Highway/M31 is the straight‑ish ribbon between Melbourne and Sydney, with towns that specialise in good pies and bigger‑than‑necessary lawn ornaments.

On the Victorian run you’ll pass or duck near Seymour, Euroa, Benalla, Glenrowan (Ned Kelly country), Wangaratta and the border twins Wodonga/Albury.

In New South Wales it’s a cavalcade: Holbrook (yes, the submarine), Tarcutta, Gundagai (Dog on the Tucker Box), Jugiong, Yass, Goulburn (Big Merino), Marulan, then the Southern Highlands stretch via Mittagong/Bowral/Berrima before the Sydney fringe.

Most of these are bypassed by freeway, so exits appear, disappear and reappear quicker than your willpower at a servo lolly aisle—watch the signs and the speed limits.
