A hydrogen V8 engine is a familiar internal-combustion V8 tweaked to burn compressed hydrogen instead of petrol—same rumble, different snack.
Prototypes from the likes of Toyota and Yamaha show it can work, with quick refuelling and near-zero CO2 at the tailpipe, though some NOx can still appear.
The catch? Hydrogen’s poor volumetric energy density demands big high-pressure tanks, and output often trails petrol V8s unless you add boost and smart calibration.
Promising for racing and niche fleets, sure—but for Aussie buyers today, hydrogen V8s are unicorns at the servo, not showroom stock.
