hyundai engine problems australia Page 14

In Australia, Hyundai’s headline engine gremlin has been bearing wear and related failures in some 2.0/2.4 GDI “Theta” petrols from the last decade; not common, but noisy when it happens.

There have also been diesel DPF headaches for short-trip drivers and the usual oil-consumption gripes in a minority of higher‑km petrols.

What to watch for:

• Cold-start knock, metallic glitter in the oil, or sudden loss of power (possible rod‑bearing trouble).
• DPF warning lights, frequent regens, limp mode after lots of urban use on CRDi models.
• Rising oil level from post‑injections, fuel smell in oil, or poor economy (DPF-related).
• Persistent oil consumption or smoke under load on some NU/Theta petrols.
• Coolant leaks or overheating from ageing water pumps and hoses on older i30/Tucson/Santa Fe.

Check recall status via Hyundai Australia using your VIN, insist on a full service history, and get a pre‑purchase inspection; a well‑maintained Hyundai can be utterly drama‑free.
