The Hyundai Pony Coupe Concept is the retro-futurist icon that kick-started Hyundai’s design swagger back in 1974, penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro and unveiled at the Turin Motor Show. Its crisp wedge lines later echoed through a certain stainless-steel cult classic, because Giugiaro was busy being, well, Giugiaro. In 2023 Hyundai and Italdesign rebuilt the original concept to celebrate the brand’s roots, while the riotous N Vision 74 paid modern tribute with cyberpunk attitude. It’s not a production car, but it is the family portrait that explains why today’s Hyundais look so assertive. Consider it the grandfather of Hyundai cool, still showing up to reunions in a sharp suit and stealing the limelight.
