The Hyundai Staria AWD will do dirt roads, soggy campsites and sandy tracks without breaking a sweat, but it’s no rock-hopper. HTRAC shuffles torque smartly and the terrain modes help, yet there’s no low-range or locking diffs, so ambition needs to match physics. Ground clearance and long overhangs are the fun police on ruts and washouts, and the highway tyres cry uncle before the drivetrain does. Fit tougher rubber, carry proper recovery gear, and mind that approach angle—your bumper will thank you.

For touring duty—gravel, beach runs with sensible pressures, mild fire trails—it’s a comfy, capable people mover. For gnarly stuff, bring a ladder-frame 4x4 and a sense of humour.
