illegal car mods nsw Page 7

Thinking of spicing up your ride in NSW? Lovely—just don’t give the constabulary a neon-lit reason to say hello.

As a rule, anything that makes the car louder, dirtier, blinder, or taller/shorter without proper certification tends to be illegal or defect-worthy.

Mods that commonly get people pinged include:

• Exhausts that exceed noise limits or remove catalytic converters/DPFs
• HID/LED swaps in halogen housings, underglow, or red/blue emergency-style lights
• Window tint too dark, or windscreen tinting beyond the top band
• Tyres/wheels that stick past guards, or big track/diameter changes
• Ride-height lifts/drops and suspension/steering/brake changes without engineering sign-off
• Airbag/seat/seatbelt deletes, uncertified engine swaps or forced-induction conversions
• Sharp edges, bonnet scoops blocking vision, plate covers, or deleted emissions gear

If it’s engineered to ADRs/VSB 14 by a licensed certifier and noted on your rego, you’re generally sweet; if not, expect a defect and a tale for the pub.

Check Transport for NSW guidance before you wrench—cheaper than fines and far less embarrassing.
