In Australia, a car is “illegal” when it can’t be registered for road use — not because it looks dodgy, but because it fails the Australian Design Rules (ADR) or isn’t listed on the federal Road Vehicle Register.
That captures many grey imports without compliance, left-hand-drive cars outside concessional schemes, and anything with silly mods like chopped springs, illegal lifts, loud exhausts, or disabled airbags.
Vehicles written off, unroadworthy, or missing safety kit (think ABS/ESC where required) won’t pass a rego inspection either, and emissions “delete” tunes are a very quick way to make a legal ute illegal.
Some pre‑2004 imports also fall foul of asbestos rules, and classic LHDs usually need conversion or special permits that vary by state.
Track-only specials? Lovely on a circuit, utterly off-limits on public roads.
Bottom line: if it doesn’t meet ADRs and state regs, it’s a driveway ornament; check your state authority and the RAV before buying anything that seems “too spicy.”
