importing a car to australia from japan Page 4

Yes, you can import a car from Japan, but it’s more paperwork than a tax audit. Check eligibility under the Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme (SEVS) and secure a federal import approval before anything leaves port. Budget for shipping and insurance, customs duty (where applicable), GST (10%), and possibly Luxury Car Tax, plus biosecurity cleaning and asbestos compliance. Once landed, a Registered Automotive Workshop will bring it up to ADRs and get it onto the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV). After that it’s state rego: roadworthy, proof of ownership, number plates—the usual bureaucratic obstacle course. A reputable import agent turns pain into paperwork; DIY builds character like hiking with a fridge.
