indicator laws australia Page 2

In Australia, indicator laws are about as exciting as watching paint dry, but crucial nonetheless. Drivers must use their indicators (turn signals) when turning, changing lanes, or merging to let other road users know their intentions. Failure to comply can result in fines and demerit points—because apparently, blinking lights are a big deal here.

Key points:

• Indicators must be activated well before the maneuver (at least 3 seconds or 30 metres in urban areas).
• Failure to signal is a common cause of accidents and penalties.
• Using indicators unnecessarily or leaving them on can also confuse other drivers and is frowned upon.
