Chasing an “international driver licence” in Melbourne? If you hold an Australian licence, the International Driving Permit (IDP) is issued in Victoria by RACV and is valid for 12 months.
It’s a translation of your existing licence, not a golden ticket—carry your physical licence with it at all times. Visitors to Melbourne need to get an IDP from their home country before arriving; you can’t be issued one here unless you hold an Australian licence.
If your overseas licence is in English, you can usually drive in Victoria without an IDP; if it isn’t, you’ll need an IDP or an official translation, and hire cars will insist. For fees, documents and how to apply (online or by mail), check RACV or VicRoads for the latest requirements.
