On 30 September 1955, James Dean died after a crash near Cholame Junction, California, while driving his Porsche 550 Spyder, nicknamed “Little Bastard”. A 1950 Ford Tudor, driven by Donald Turnupseed, turned left across the highway; the low-slung Porsche collided head-on.

Dean suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after; his passenger, mechanic Rolf Wütherich, survived with serious injuries, while Turnupseed sustained minor injuries.
