The ATO’s cents-per-kilometre method lets you claim work-related car use at a set rate per km, up to 5,000 km per car per financial year.
You don’t need a logbook, but you must be able to show how you calculated those kilometres (diaries, calendars, job sheets—something sturdier than “vibes”). The rate bundles fuel, servicing, rego, insurance and depreciation, so there’s no double-dipping with separate car costs. Parking and tolls for work trips can be added on top, but commuting is about as deductible as your morning flat white. If your work use is heavy, a logbook method might yield a bigger claim—bring patience and a pen. Rates change year to year, so check the current ATO figure and your eligibility. Consult official documentation for exact figures.
