lake eyre pink Page 122

Lake Eyre's famous pink hue is a cheeky little trick of nature, mostly due to the presence of salt-loving algae and bacteria that thrive when the lake fills with water. These microorganisms produce pigments that tint the water a delightful shade of pink, turning the otherwise bleak salt flats into a surreal, blush-colored wonderland. It's a rare spectacle, only happening when there's enough rain to fill the lake, which can be years apart. The effect is temporary, fading as the water evaporates and the algae die off. For the best viewing, timing your trip just right is essential—check local reports or sites like ServiceCentral for updates on water levels and coloration.
