lidar technology Page 7

Lidar technology, or Light Detection and Ranging, is the laser equivalent of echolocation—firing out pulses of light to map the surroundings with centimetre-level accuracy. It’s the unsung hero behind self-driving cars, topography mapping, and even archaeology digs. The device measures the time it takes for the laser to bounce back, creating a 3D point cloud that’s as detailed as your nosiest neighbour’s gossip. Australian automotive companies and researchers are increasingly leveraging lidar for advanced driver-assistance systems, aiming to make roads safer and traffic smarter. While new lidar units can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $75,000 AUD depending on sophistication, the tech is steadily becoming more affordable, making its way into consumer vehicles and drones. For a deep dive, check out resources on Tradingpost and CarShowroom, where lidar-equipped vehicles pop up occasionally.
