Loaning a car sounds friendly until insurance turns into a plot twist. In Australia, most comprehensive policies cover another licensed driver with your permission, but unlisted-driver or age excesses can be eye-watering. If they crash it, the claim lands on your policy and you’ll be on the hook for the excess—unless your insurer recovers it from the driver. Traffic fines belong to the driver, but the notice hits the owner first, so nominate them quickly; tolls are similar unless they use your tag or set up a pass. Make sure the car’s registered and roadworthy, the driver’s properly licensed and sober, and follow any insurer rules about listing drivers. If they’re under 25 or unlisted, expect higher excesses or even no cover under some policies—read the PDS before you hand over the keys.
