For most dual-cab utes in Australia, a practical maximum tray length is around 1,650–1,800 mm without chassis extensions or engineering wizardry.
Factory tubs usually sit near 1,540–1,590 mm internal length; alloy trays can stretch to about 1,800 mm if you keep the rules happy.
The big limiter is rear overhang: generally it can’t exceed 60% of the wheelbase (or 3.7 m, whichever’s less) measured from the rear axle to the furthest point.
Example: a Ranger (WB ~3,270 mm) allows roughly ~1,960 mm rear overhang; a HiLux (WB ~3,085 mm) about ~1,850 mm—enough for a tidy ~1.8 m tray without turning it into a plank.
Mind GVM/axle loads and where you park heavy gear; too much behind the axle makes it a seesaw with road manners to match.
Consult official documentation for exact figures.
