mazda 323 common problems

The Mazda 323 is as honest as a meat pie, but age shows in the usual spots. If you’re shopping one in Australia, expect routine wear rather than catastrophic drama. Still, a quick checklist will save you from a wallet that squeaks louder than the suspension.

Ignition coils/leads or distributor on older cars causing misfire and rough idle
MAF sensor or EGR buildup leading to hesitation or stalling
Rocker cover gasket oil leaks dripping onto exhaust
Radiator plastic end tanks and thermostats aging, causing overheating
Worn suspension bushes/strut top mounts creating clunks and sloppy steering
CV joint clicks on full lock; tired wheel bearings humming at speed
Power window regulators/door lock actuators failing; tired alternators
Rust in rear arches, hatch edges and sills, worse on coastal cars

Service history is king; a timing-belt-and-water-pump job on schedule is worth its weight in petrol vouchers. Get a pre-purchase inspection and you’ll likely end up with a cheap, cheerful runabout that just keeps clocking kilometres.
