mazda 3 diesel problems Page 6

The Mazda 3 diesel pulls like a determined kelpie, but short-trip city life can make it a bit… grumpy. Here are the usual suspects owners see when the honeymoon ends:

• DPF clogging and forced regens if it’s only doing school runs and coffee dashes.
• Rising engine oil level from diesel dilution after repeated regens—watch that dipstick.
• EGR valve and intake soot buildup causing rough idle and lacklustre oomph.
• Turbo whine or smoke from worn bearings if servicing’s been “optimistic”.
• Dual-mass flywheel shudder on manuals; injector or high-pressure pump drama if fuel quality’s poor.

Give it regular highway stints, use the correct low-SAPS oil, and keep software updates current to keep the DPF zen. Shopping used (say, via Tradingpost)? Scan for fault codes, check service history, and make sure the oil isn’t mysteriously multiplying. Do that, and the torquey charm returns quicker than a barista to a smashed-avo order.
