mazda 3 sp23 problems

The Mazda 3 SP23 (BK series, mid‑2000s) is a zesty little thing that soldiers on bravely—until neglected maintenance catches up like a bad curry. They’re generally stout, but a few age‑related gremlins crop up predictably on Aussie roads:

  • Collapsed engine mounts causing vibration at idle and a thunk on take‑off.
  • Worn front control‑arm/sway‑bar bushes and links, leading to clunks and feathered tyres.
  • Sticky rear brake calipers or handbrake mechanisms (hot wheels, weak park brake).
  • Coolant or oil leaks around the thermostat housing/water pump; watch temps and coolant smell.
  • EGR/carbon build‑up or tired coil packs causing rough idle, misfire and a glowing MIL.

Listen for knocks over bumps, check for smooth idle and cold‑start AC, and inspect service history for fresh mounts, brakes and fluids. A pre‑purchase inspection and recall check are cheap insurance compared with inheriting someone’s deferred maintenance.
