mazda bravo 2005 problems

The 2005 Mazda Bravo (twin to the Ford Courier) is a tough old ute, but time has a way of pointing out the squeaks, leaks and rattles. If you’re shopping one, assume it’s worked for a living and check the usual suspects twice.

Common issues include:

  • WL 2.5 turbo-diesel overheating leading to cracked heads/head gaskets if cooling is neglected.
  • Timing belt overdue or unknown history; tensioners and water pump worth doing together.
  • Turbo wear, smoky starts, and injector/fuel pump grumbles on high‑km examples.
  • EGR and intake clogging causing rough idle and lost pep.
  • Front suspension bushes/ball joints and steering racks getting tired from corrugations.
  • Clutch and gearbox synchros (2nd/3rd) if it’s towed heavy or been flogged.
  • Rust in tray seams, sills, and floor, plus electrical gremlins (alternator, glow plugs).

Get a cold start, pressure-test the cooling system, and look for fresh head work without proof of cause. A pre-purchase inspection is cheaper than a new cylinder head—ask me how I know.
