mazda bt 50 problems Page 7

The Mazda BT-50 has worn two hats: early models share bones with the Ford Ranger, while 2020-onward versions are Isuzu D-Max underneath. Across both, most woes are diesel-ute classics rather than catastrophes.

• DPF clogging if you mainly do short, low-speed trips; watch for frequent regens and rising oil level.
• Injector and EGR carbon build-up (earlier Ford-sourced 3.2/2.2 diesels) causing rough idle and the occasional limp-home drama.
• Auto transmission shudder or harsh shifts; fresh fluid and updated calibrations often help.
• Rear leaf-spring squeaks or sag under load; many owners fit aftermarket packs.
• Electrical gremlins: sensors, alternators, and infotainment glitches; check recall and TSB history.
• On 2020+ Isuzu-based 3.0: occasional DPF/NOx sensor faults and reports of rear diff or prop-shaft noises.

Service history is king; a pre-purchase inspection and a scan for codes beat blind faith and a servo sausage roll. Many are stout workhorses when maintained, so budget for proper fluids, decent tyres, and the odd sensor tantrum.
