The 2023 Mazda CX-8 is the sensible seven-seater that doesn’t shout, it just quietly gets on with being comfy, efficient and nicely screwed together.

You can have a 2.5‑litre petrol front-drive or a 2.2‑litre turbo-diesel with all-wheel drive, both tied to a smooth 6‑speed auto.

Ride comfort is plush, cabin quality feels a cut above the price, and the second row is adult-friendly; the third row is best for kids or nimble contortionists.

Tech is up to date with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a clear infotainment screen, plus a full suite of active safety that doesn’t nag too much.

Boot space with all three rows up is modest, but fold the third row and it turns into a family removalist; the diesel sips gently, the petrol a bit less so.

If you want flash and fireworks, look elsewhere; if you want an easy, long-legged tourer, the CX-8 nails the brief.
