Chasing the Melbourne pink lake? Head to Westgate Park in Port Melbourne, where the salty lagoon turns fairy-floss pink when heat, sunlight and low rainfall line up.

The colour comes from algae and halobacteria doing their summer chemistry set—harmless to look at, not for swimming.

Best chance is late summer and early autumn after hot, dry spells; some years it’ll ghost you, because nature hates schedules.

Stick to paths, don’t chuck rocks or bottles in, and leave the Instagram props behind—rangers have seen it all.

If you want the big, cinematic stuff, Victoria’s Murray‑Sunset National Park and Lake Tyrrell also go rosy, but they’re proper road‑trip territory.

Check recent local reports before you go; pink isn’t guaranteed, and neither is your patience.
