Melbourne to Canberra by road is simple: stick to the M31 Hume Highway, then swing onto the M23/A25 Barton Highway and you’re rolling into the capital.
It’s roughly 660 km and about 7–8 hours of driving depending on traffic, weather and how many meat pies you pull over for.
No tolls on that route once you’re on the Hume, and it’s dual carriageway for the vast majority with a 110 km/h limit in many sections.
Good stops include Albury–Wodonga, Holbrook (yes, the submarine), Gundagai (Dog on the Tuckerbox), and Yass for a last stretch of legs before Parliament and roundabouts.
Fuel up before the Barton, watch for roadworks and roos at dusk, and you’ll be in Canberra before the playlist runs out of 80s bangers.
