mitsubishi pajero 2005 problems Page 2

The 2005 Mitsubishi Pajero is a tough old unit, but time and off‑road bravado do invite a few gremlins.

• Diesel (4M41): EGR and intake manifold soot build-up causing rough idle, smoke, and dulled performance.
• Crank pulley/harmonic balancer delamination leading to belt wobble and chirps; catch it before it takes out accessories.
• Cooling system woes: ageing radiators, viscous fan clutches, and clogged cores that show up as overheating when towing.
• Auto transmission heat under load; an auxiliary cooler is cheap insurance, and shudder at low speeds usually points to fluid neglect.
• Super Select 4WD flashing lights from tired vacuum lines/solenoids or a lazy front diff actuator.
• Suspension bushes/ball joints (front lower control arms, rear trailing arms) wearing out and causing clunks and wandering.
• Wheel bearings and ABS sensors getting crusty with age and mud; intermittent ABS lights are a classic tell.
• Rust spots around the tailgate seam and rear wheel-arch lips, plus occasional rocker cover oil leaks on the petrol V6 (timing belt due by age, too).

A pre‑purchase inspection that checks driveline vacuum, cooling performance, and bushings will save you a fortune—and a long sulk by the side of a track.
